Overview of Snif
In early 2020, former J.P. Morgan employee Phil Riportella and former Deloitte employee Bryan Edwards teamed up to start developing the Snif brand. Within 5 months, Snif was operating out of their headquarters in New York City.
Riportella and Edwards wanted to move the fragrance industry into a more modern space, shifting away from salesperson-driven browsing, confounding industry jargon, high prices, overwhelming choices, potentially toxic ingredients, and the inability to easily try a product before committing.
Snif is meant to be an alternative way of buying fragrances that solves these problems. Instead of guiding customers through a vast selection with esoteric product descriptions, Snif offers you the experience of trying out samples of fragrances from a changing, curated selection, and only paying for the ones you actually enjoy.
Trying our Snif fragrances for yourself is as easy as buying a Snif Trial Kit. The process is simple:
- Select the candles or personal scents that you would like to sample. You can try them individually or choose a curated set of 3.
- Snif will ship a box that contains a sealed full-size version of the scent(s) you chose and a matching sample-sized version.
- You can try the sample for 7 days, free of charge (with a hold placed on your card for the full price).
- When the trial is over, you can keep the full-sized products you enjoy and return whatever isn’t to your taste (still sealed). Just initiate your free return within the 7 day trial on the brand’s website.
- Snif will only charge your card for the fragrances you keep.
- For sets, the more fragrances you keep, the lower the cost of each item will be.
When Snif first launched, the founders actually kept the scent notes of their first collection a secret. This was meant to draw some attention and prompt the customers to try the scents solely relying on their own personal tastes, rather than being swayed by descriptions and preconceptions about particular fragrance ingredients.
After this successful initial experiment, Snif has always included a full note list for each scent. They keep their descriptions simple, so customers can easily understand what impression the fragrance is trying to make, and how its individual notes are used to create it.
Snif also keeps the customer in mind when they’re crafting their scents. Their site says they use a “scent board” made up of individuals with no connection with the fragrances industry to help create and test their scents, in an effort to deliver what people really want.
All collections are initially limited editions, with a limit of 3 of any given scent per customer upon their release. This helps keep their product line lean and easy to browse, while also limiting overbuying.
Snif also periodically restocks past favourites, so if you miss a collection or want to get more of a scent, you can join a waitlist to get notified.
All of Snif’s perfumes are considered vegan, cruelty-free, and non-toxic. Snif says that everything is made with industry clean standards in mind, and their products are free of any preservatives, phthalates, parabens, and paraffin. They also encourage anyone with sensitivities to contact the company and ask for an allergen check on any product.
They’re also subverting fragrance industry standards by not gendering their products. All of their scents can be worn by anyone. This also applies to all of their collabs with other brands, influencers, and celebs, including Harry Hudson, who was their first creative partnership.
In the future, Snif is planning to keep releasing new collections and collaborating with more partners, to continue on their path of making intriguing scents.

Snif Sweet Ash Review
You know those mysterious, magnetic scents that just fascinate you no matter how often you smell them? Snif Sweet Ash perfume is just that, a grounded, complex scent described by the creators as “addictive.”

Snif Candles Review
Made right in the US, these candles are great for when you want to set a mood in a particular area and not just around you. For this Snif review, I’ll be looking at best sellers Old Saint Wick and Prenup.
Snif Old Saint Wick Review
Aside from hot chocolate, roasting turkey, and fresh gingerbread, what would you say is one of the most iconic smells around the holidays? If the scent of evergreens puts you in the festive spirit – no matter the time of year – the Old Saint Wick candle might be your cup of tea (or perhaps eggnog!).
Described by Snif as smelling woodsy and fresh-cut, their Old Saint Wick is an inviting reminder of the holiday season, thanks to rosemary and notes of “dry cider” coming from the inclusion of apple blossom.
Old Saint Wick’s full list of notes includes:
- Siberian pine
- Apple blossom
- Rosemary
- Jasmine
- Fir balsam
- Sandalwood
- Cedarwood
This vegan candle is made of soy and vegetable wax with a cotton wick and has a fragrance concentration of 12%.
To get the most out of your candle, Snif suggests initially burning your candle for 2-3 hours to let the top layer of wax melt. Then, after each burn, cut a quarter-inch of wick off and keep burn time to no more than 4 hours.
This candle is a seasonal offering so it’s not included in a Trial Kit.
Old Saint Wick is available to buy directly in 2 sizes:
- Regular: An 8.5 oz candle with 50-60 hours of burn time – $49
- XL: An extra-large 50 oz candle with over 200 hours of burn time – $179
Snif Prenup Review
It’s a safe bet that when someone says “love is in the air,” they’re not being as literal as this. But, if you’re looking to make an occasion with your special someone even more romantic – or maybe just a little more tongue-in-cheek – check out the Prenup candle.
Inspired by brand founder Phil Riportella wanting to create a candle for his own wedding that was more irreverent than sentimental, the Prenup candle is a warm, inviting, romantic scent.
Defined by the creators as musky and smooth, you’ll find notes of:
- Ink
- Black amber
- Vetiver
- Ebony wood
- Musk
- Vanilla
- Tonka bean
This candle can burn for up to 60 hours and also isn’t part of Snif’s trial service. Prenup comes in an 8.5 oz jar with a slick black label, for $49.
Who Is Snif For?
Whether you’re looking for a new signature smell or need to make a statement, or if you’re just curious about new takes on scent and love unique yet crowd-pleasing fragrances, Snif has something to please your senses.
Snif is also a terrifically inclusive brand, offering scents that are cruelty-free, clean, and not confined by some of the conventional perfumerie ideas of defining scents by note profiles or gender.
They’re also driven by a try before you buy approach, which lifts a major barrier to the fragrance market.
If you’re a fragrance connoisseur, you’d be remiss not to at least try the free trial and see what this new brand has to offer. If you’re new to the world of scents and want to explore, this is a perfect starting point that won’t cost you a dime if you don’t like what you smell
To share my opinion for this Snif Review, these products are for anyone and everyone who wants to give them a try.
Snif Reviews: What Do Customers Think?
For this Snif review I wanted to find out what real customers have been saying about their experiences about this brand. However, because they’re a relatively new brand whose profile is still growing, online feedback from customers is still limited.
From the Snif reviews that are available, it seems most customers have positive experiences! Of course, fragrance reviews rely on personal taste – a scent that works for you might clash with someone else’s chemistry. That said, many enjoy Snif’s fragrances on the whole, as well as the experience of trying them through their unique service.
One Snif review from the brand’s official site shares how a customer fell for their Sweet Ash perfume: “believe the hype! i was iffy on sweet ash at first but it grew on me. plus, the look of desire that flashed in my partner’s eyes the first and everytime i wear it is more than enough reason to have kept the big bottle. loving my snif so far and just ordered a new one to try!”
Sweet Ash isn’t the only product getting raves on Snif’s site. Check out the star ratings of all of the products in my Snif review:
- Honorable Mention – 4.2 out of 5 stars, based on 45 reviews
- Poppy Issues – 4.1 out of 5 stars, based on 39 reviews
- Sweet Ash – 4.6 out of 5 stars, based on 168 reviews
- Ex On The Beach – 4.4 out of 5 stars. based on 25 reviews
- Old Saint Wick – 5 out of 5 stars. based on 27 reviews
- Prenup – 5 out of 5 stars, based on 7 reviews
When I checked out Reddit, a site with many forums dedicated to fragrance, I noticed that the brand’s business model and return process is definitely working for people.
One Reddit user notes in their Snif review, “I really do enjoy the concept and the process. It’s good to know that I can easily return it if I don’t like it.”
I’ve also learned fragrance fans think Snif’s customer service isn’t too shabby, either! A review from thingtesting.com says, “I had an issue with one of my test vials leaking and customer service was able to send me a replacement and extend my trial.”
Is Snif Worth It?
While scent is a deeply personal matter, Snif’s innovative approach to fragrance retail and fragrance creation really opens the doors to a whole new range of customers.
With their genderless, clean, and unique scents, discussed in a totally transparent way, Snif has made space for a wide range of consumers – from those who aren’t interested in or able to purchase traditional perfume, to fragrance fans who love trying new things, to people just starting to explore their tastes.
And you can do all of that exploring for free! As I found out while writing this Snif review, the brand lets you try almost everything they sell, allowing you to figure out what scents suit you, or to take chances and broaden your scent wardrobe in unexpected ways.
Snif allows you to only commit to what you genuinely like – suggesting the brand prioritizes the consumer, but also stands behind their product.
Given that there is no risk in sampling their inventive, genderless fragrances, and the ingredients they use are clean and vegan, I think it’s worth taking a whiff of this unique new brand.
