About Rogaine

Rogaine Review

Rogaine helps men and women who struggle with hair thinning and loss to regrow their natural hair. As a brand that needs no introduction, they’ve become a household name over the last 30 years

Numerous publications such as Good Housekeeping, HypeBae, The Trendspotter, The Huffington Post, WWD, and Healthline have all featured a Rogaine review.

The brand uses a mixture of minoxidil, plant extracts, and AHA to stimulate the rate of hair growth and increase the number of thicker strands.

This Rogaine review will take a close look at the brand and their products, providing real customer testimonials, information on promotions, and more to help you figure out if the hair regenerative solution is right for you.

Overview of Rogaine

Rogaine Review

Rogaine launched their first prescription product back in 1988 after the brand’s founder, dermatologist Guinter Hahn, discovered that minoxidil had a positive effect on regrowing hair in patients with androgenic alopecia (the main cause of hair loss in men and women).

In under 10 years, Rogaine products were available over-the-counter, giving the public access to the FDA-approved solution. To this day, minoxidil is the only clinically-approved medication for promoting hair growth.

Hair loss or alopecia can have a substantial social and psychological impact affecting the overall quality of life. One study[1] evaluated this effect on men with androgenic alopecia (the most common type of hair loss). 200 men between 18-60 years old completed a survey. Results found that androgenic alopecia significantly reduced participants’ quality of life, particularly affecting social interactions.

As for hair loss in females, a narrative review[2] highlighted its negative effect on women’s self-esteem, self-confidence, and overall quality of life. Fortunately, with an early diagnosis and treatment, alopecia can be stopped, slowed, and many times reversed. Rogaine offers affordable treatments with proven efficacy.

In 2006, Johnson & Johnson acquired the company, creating the unscented foam that has grown to be so popular today. By 2014, Rogaine had released products targeted towards the hair loss concerns of both men and women.

Now that you know about how the brand got started, this Rogaine review will fill you in on their highlights:

How does Rogaine work?

Rogaine Review

Rogaine minoxidil is a vasodilator. Vasodilators dilate your blood vessels so that blood can pass through them with less resistance. Minoxidil favors the microcirculation around the hair follicles which appears to cause hair growth. Other mechanisms of action include the induction of vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), stimulation of the prostaglandin-endoperoxide synthase, anti-androgen effects, and direct effect on the hair follicles delaying their aging.

Rogaine 5 expands the growth phase of your hair as well as enlarging each strand’s follicle, allowing more hair to pass through for a longer period. This is made easier when the circulation to your scalp is improved.

How much Rogaine do I apply?

Rogaine Review

The brand recommends using just 1ml of Rogaine foam or solution per application. You’ll be applying the product (half a capful or one dropper) twice per day: once in the morning and once in the evening if you’re male, or just once per day as a female.

How long does Rogaine take to work?

Rogaine Review

This Rogaine review notes that not every type of hair loss can be fixed by using the hair regenerative product, and results can take up to 4 months to show.

In the first 8 weeks of using the product twice per day, your hair should no longer be shedding. In the following 8 weeks, you should start to see new hair growth.

Rogaine products require consistency. Because it takes up to 4 months to start seeing results, you may find that you need at least 6 months of product to get the full effect. That’s why the brand offers a subscription service that also gives up to 20% off on their hair loss treatment.

In the following sections, we’ll go over a selection of Rogaine minoxidil for women and men.

Rogaine for Men Review

Rogaine is scientifically proven to work[3], restoring confidence in men around the world.

This Rogaine review will feature the brand’s best-selling men’s minoxidil products, namely their regular solution and unscented foam, in 1, 3, and 4-month supplies.

Rogaine Men’s ROGAINE® 5% Minoxidil Solution – 1 Month Supply Review

Hair loss is complicated. It can happen for many different reasons. When our hair does start to disappear, it often takes our confidence with it.

Rogaine uses a 5% minoxidil solution to encourage hair to come back. Minoxidil has been used since the mid-80s once scientists discovered that it reversed alopecia. A clinical trial[4] evaluated the efficacy of minoxidil in men with androgenic alopecia. 393 men were randomly assigned to apply minoxidil 2%, minoxidil 5%, or a placebo solution in the scalp for 48 weeks.

Minoxidil proved to be effective for androgenic alopecia, being minoxidil 5% superior to minoxidil 2% (45% more hair recovery). In addition, it was well tolerated and improved the psychosocial perception of hair loss. Rogaine is a fairly straightforward product. The solution comes in a bottle with a dropper that you will dispense directly onto your scalp.

The 2 fl oz Men’s ROGAINE 5% Minoxidil Solution – 1 Month Supply is $29.

Rogaine Men’s ROGAINE® 5% Minoxidil Unscented Foam – 3 Month Supply Review

Many brands these days have released foam versions of their signature products. The friendly foam format is easy to use and provides better coverage

The Men’s ROGAINE 5% Minoxidil Unscented Foam – 3 Month Supply uses a mixture of minoxidil, plant extracts, emollient (read: skin-soothing savior), and alpha hydroxy acid (AHA) to open hair follicles and keep them open, aiding in hair growth.

This special formula uses Tricho-Prime™ to speed up the process and ensure that it starts as soon as the foam hits your head. Some men have used the solution to grow a Rogaine beard, but this isn’t recommended by the brand.

Rogaine says that you should begin to see results in 3 months, so this 3-month supply is perfect. Start your hair-recovery journey for $42.

Rogaine Men’s ROGAINE® 5% Minoxidil Solution – 3 Month Supply Review

Consistency is important when using any product. To see the results you want, you need to follow the instructions to the ‘T’.

We understand that hair loss is difficult and that you may be in a hurry to stimulate growth, but using more of the product won’t speed up hair regeneration, it will simply waste the product and cause side effects.

Rogaine recommends that you only use the 1ml dose of the product twice per day. Trust the pros on this one. If a brand says to use a small amount, use that amount.

Be sure to follow your daily regimen and keep using the Men’s ROGAINE 5% Minoxidil Solution – 3 Month Supply every day, twice a day. Stick to your schedule and see results with this 3-month supply for $52.

Rogaine Men’s ROGAINE® 5% Minoxidil Solution – 4-Month Supply Review

Some men take up to 4 months to start regrowing hair. Because of this, you may find it handy to have a supply on hand to fit that timeframe.

The Men’s ROGAINE 5% Minoxidil Solution – 4 Month Supply will keep you stocked up on the brand’s original solution.

Proper application is key, so below you’ll find steps on how to use the product:

  1. Be sure your hair is dry: do not use on wet hair
  2. Use a comb or your fingers to part your hair (if possible) into several rows. This is to maximize scalp exposure (the part you’re trying to target)
  3. Using the dropper, suck up the liquid in the bottle to the 1ml line
  4. Position it over the part of your head you want to treat
  5. Squeeze the rubber part of the dropper to dispense the liquid over your scalp
  6. Use your hands to massage the liquid in
  7. Let air dry before you style your hair with any products or use a blow dryer
  8. Do not touch other skin areas (you don’t want hair to grow in your face)
  9. Wash your hands

Like we’ve said, Rogaine is a fairly simple product, with a straightforward process that gives real, noticeable results. Try it for yourself with the 4-month supply for $77.

Rogaine for Women Review

Women’s Rogaine products are specifically made for the fairer sex. The brand cautions women against using the other versions due to the higher concentration of ingredients. However, the same ingredients and concentrations are displayed in both men and women package leaflets.

According to the American Academy of Dermatology, minoxidil is effective, safe, and usually well tolerated. However, if you are pregnant, planning to be pregnant or breastfeeding, you should not use this product.

This Rogaine review will feature the brand’s highest-selling women’s products below in regular and unscented versions, available in 1, 2, 3, and 6-month quantities.

Rogaine Women’s ROGAINE® 5% Minoxidil Unscented Foam – 2 Month Supply Review

There are a million hair-thickening products on the market. Shampoos, serums, creams — you name it, they’ve come up with it.

Many of these drugstore products simply coat the hair, making it appear thicker. In reality, it’s not your actual hair, and in a few weeks, your “thick” strands will have disappeared all over again.

The Women’s ROGAINE 5% Minoxidil Unscented Foam gets to the root of the problem, literally. It’s absorbed by your scalp, coaxing your real hair to grow easier while preventing further hair loss.

One study[5] evaluating the efficacy of minoxidil in women with androgenic alopecia involved 381 women (aged 18-40 years old) who were randomized to apply either minoxidil 2%, minoxidil 5%, or a placebo into the scalp for 48 weeks.

Minoxidil showed to be effective in women with androgenic alopecia, being minoxidil 5% superior to minoxidil 2%. The product was generally well tolerated and improved the psychosocial perceptions of hair loss.

The unscented Rogaine for women 5 foam is a mixture of minoxidil, botanical extracts, and AHA that band together to give you stronger, healthier, and fuller hair.

The 2-Month supply is enough for your hair loss to stop, and you may want to purchase this amount to see if Rogaine is really capable of backing up their claims.

Make a start with the Women’s ROGAINE 5% Minoxidil Unscented Foam – 2 Month Supply for $29.

Rogaine Women’s ROGAINE® 2% Minoxidil Solution – 3 Month Supply Review

In 3 months, you should begin to see new hair growth happening. Exciting! Did you know that 80% of users increased the amount of hair they had on their heads when using Rogaine?

The Women’s ROGAINE 2% Minoxidil Solution – 3 Month Supply is a gentler formula, specific for women with hair thinning and loss. This solution comes in dropper form and should be dispensed on dry or slightly damp hair.

Be sure to follow the instructions in your women’s Rogaine manual and remember to be consistent. Results can be slow, but they do happen.

Get thicker, more noticeable hair with the Women’s ROGAINE 2% Minoxidil Solution – 3 Month Supply for $52.

Rogaine Women’s ROGAINE® 5% Minoxidil Unscented Foam – 6 Month Supply Review

The Women’s ROGAINE 5% Minoxidil Unscented Foam – 6 Month Supply is sure to keep you stocked up for the months ahead.

Everyone’s experience with Rogaine is different. While results may begin to show in 3 months, you may find that you want to extend the use of the product to maintain the effect. In a 5-year follow-up study[6] of men using minoxidil for hair loss treatment, E.A. Olsen and colleagues reported that hair regrowth picked after one year and slowly decreased over time. However, minoxidil maintained the recovered hair over the 5 years the study lasted.

Using the unscented foam is similar to the solution, but we’ll outline the steps for you below:

  1. Be sure your hair is dry or slightly damp
  2. Part your hair into several rows to expose your scalp
  3. Dispense half a capful of foam onto your fingers by holding the can upside down and pressing on the nozzle
  4. Massage into your scalp in the areas where your hair is thinning
  5. Let air dry completely before you style your hair or use a blow dryer
  6. Do not touch other skin areas (you don’t want hair to grow in your face)
  7. Wash your hands

Rogaine Reviews: What Do Customers Think?

Rogaine Review

You may have heard about Rogaine and are wondering if it really works. The brand’s website says it does, but you might still be skeptical. Don’t stress, as this Rogaine review will fill you in on real customer experiences with the product.

Ahead, you’ll find buyer testimonials sourced from the brand’s website, Amazon, and Influenster, all revealing if Rogaine really works.

Below, we’ve compiled ratings for Rogaine’s customer favorites:

  • Women’s ROGAINE 5% Minoxidil Unscented Foam: 4/5 stars from over 1000 ratings
  • Women’s ROGAINE 2% Minoxidil Solution: 4.3/5 stars from over 100+ ratings
  • Men’s ROGAINE 5% Minoxidil Solution: 4/5 stars from nearly 90 ratings
  • Men’s ROGAINE 5% Minoxidil Unscented Foam: 3.8/5 stars from close to 400 ratings

We were surprised to see that more women have reviewed Rogaine on the brand’s website than men have. This doesn’t necessarily mean more women use the product than men, they may prefer to talk about their experiences more often.

Let’s take a closer look at the highly-rated Women’s ROGAINE 5% Minoxidil Unscented Foam

For many women, this product has been a life-changer. Comments report thicker hair, not to mention more of it overall.

One ecstatic customer wrote, “My part had filled in quite a bit and the scalp was no longer quite as noticeable! I nearly cried with happiness.” It’s always wonderful to hear success stories like this.

Moving on to the Men’s ROGAINE 5% Minoxidil Unscented Foam, which has a rating of 4.3/5 stars from 16,905 customers on Amazon. The rating breakdown is as follows:

  • 5/5 stars: 63%
  • 4/5 stars: 16%
  • 3/5 stars: 10%
  • 2/5 stars: 4%
  • 1/5 stars: 7%

Many Amazon buyers write about how this product worked for them, accompanied by Rogaine before and after pictures.

One man who used the foam for 7 months wrote, “rogaine DOES WORK. It’s working for me. New hairs grew all over my scalp. My hairline got darker, bald spots all started to fill in and I have more hair on my head.”

We’re happy to read another success story and have more proof that this product does what it claims to.

Though some buyers said that Rogaine didn’t work for them, the main issue that customers have with the product is that you have to keep buying it and using it for your hair to stay in.

77 Influensters rated the Men’s ROGAINE 5% Minoxidil Solution an average of 4/5 stars on Influenster.com.

One 5 star Rogaine review discussed the user’s experience while using the product. It reads, “It worked exactly as the instructions said it would. I lost more hair at first, then I had some oddly blonde peach fuzz (odd because I have dark hair), and then my hair started growing back in.”

While we can see that Rogaine does work for many, it doesn’t have the same effect for some. Users should also be aware of side effects and be sure to follow the instructions carefully to avoid any mishaps.

Is Rogaine Worth It?

Rogaine Review

Rogaine is clinically proven to regrow your hair, so we believe that this product is worth it. This review notes that the products will not work for everyone, and they do come with some potentially serious side effects. These adverse events occur when it is absorbed and reaches the systemic circulation.

By following the instructions properly, these effects can be avoided as only minimal concentrations of the active component can be absorbed. After washing your hair or using a hairdryer the scalp vessels are dilated and is more likely the drug passes to the systemic circulation. Therefore, you should naturally let the hair dry before applying the product.

If you experience any of the following when using Rogaine, stop use immediately and consult your doctor:

  • Chest pain
  • Rapid heartbeat
  • Faintness
  • Sudden weight gain
  • Headache
  • Swollen hands or feet

Other side effects include:

  • Scalp irritation and redness
  • Unwanted facial hair

Does Rogaine work? There is a possibility that their products will not work for you as it is recommended for mild to moderate cases of androgenic alopecia. However, in a survey conducted among 11,000 users who applied minoxidil 2% for one year, 92% of participants rated the product as excellent, good, or fair in reducing or stopping the hair loss process.

In terms of the risk, we haven’t come across many reviews that speak of negative Rogaine side effects, but users should keep in mind that they can occur.

In terms of price, trying Rogaine is fairly low-cost, as the price per month is just $28 — about a week’s worth of lattes from your favorite coffee shop.

With all that in mind, we do think Rogaine is worth the buy because the results are real, but keep an eye out for possible side effects.

FAQ

Rogaine Review

Will Rogaine make hair thicker?

Once you are done with the “shedding” process, the new hair that comes out is reported to be thicker. It won’t thicken existing hair. Check out the Rogaine results timeline on the brand’s website to see how it could work for you.

Can Rogaine make hair loss worse?

For some, Rogaine has caused hair loss that was said to be more than just the “shedding” process. As described in an article review[7], hair loss can increase in rare cases because it synchronizes the hair cycle. Some customers wrote about losing patches and clumps of hair that did not return while using the product. With that being said, this is not common.

Do you shake Rogaine foam?

The instructions on the brand’s website do not say that you need to shake your Rogaine foam before application.

Can you sleep with Rogaine in your hair?

Yes, you can sleep with Rogaine in your hair. Apply it at night to dry or damp hair and let it air dry overnight. There is no Rogaine shampoo, as this product is not meant to be washed out.

How bad is Rogaine shedding?

We’ve seen Rogaine shedding referred to as the “Dread Shed.” While certainly nightmarish-sounding, this process is only temporary and every user experiences it to varying degrees.

What is Rogaine’s Shipping Policy?

It takes between 1-2 business days for the company to process your order. Standard ground shipping is $8 for all Rogaine orders, and they’ll arrive at your door in about 7-10 business days. Subscription orders are shipped for free. Rogaine only ships to the contiguous US.

What is Rogaine’s Return Policy?

You can return your Rogaine products within 30 days as long as they have not been opened and are still in sellable condition. If you bought a bulk supply, you’ll need to return the entire order to qualify for a refund.

To make a return or exchange, simply give customer service a call and they’ll get the process started for you.
