About Rooted
Some people are shoe people. Others are plant people. Rooted’s fresh collection of indoor plants, herbs, and cacti brings nature inside your dwelling. Its inventory is stocked like the glorious shoe wall of the plant world with tons of variety, color, and heights.
This virtual greenhouse is packed with options and organized by care level, size, and light, so no matter where you like to spend your time, you can fill your space with the positive vibes plants are naturally full of.
A blooming business with 100k followers across its social channels, since its propagation, Rooted quickly grew towards the light. You’ll find it featured in notable publications like Forbes and The New York Times to name just a few.
Want to get in on its feel-good vibes? This Rooted review will tell you everything you need to know about the brand, including a rundown on the company itself, its most popular plants, customer feedback, and more.
Overview of Rooted
Rooted started sprouting in 2018 after founders Ryan Lee, Kay Kim, and Johnny Wu felt a little off after moving to New York from the lush environments of Hawaii and California. Loving the city for its fast-paced, urban life, the trio recognized how good it felt to fill their homes with plants, bringing a bit of what they missed into their space.
This brand is all about reconnecting people with nature, but doing it with convenient luxury. Ever wiggled a 4” fiddle leaf fig onto the subway? How about trying to stuff one in a taxi? Some things don’t mesh well with city life, and buying plants is one of them.
Rooted was created to turn the plant buying experience into one you didn’t have to think too hard about—there’s even a quiz on its site to help with the logistics. It was the smart business idea that formed after the three friends held what they call “plant parties” in their apartment, from which they’d then deliver buyer’s purchases directly to their homes free of charge.
Equipped with all of the knowledge one needs to successfully grow a plant indoors, Rooted’s selections ship with care guides. And in the same fashion as their “plant parties,” delivery is on the (green)house.

Rooted Subscription Review
Plants are like Pringle’s—one is never enough. If you’re someone whose goal is to fill their space with the beauty of nature, then the Rooted Subscription is right up your alley. Below, we’ll introduce to you the brand’s two best-selling subscription plans, one that’s big on variety, the other that’s got your four-legged friends in mind.
Rooted Mystery Jungle Subscription Box Review
We bet some of you are reading this Rooted review because you’ve looked around your home and felt it was missing something. There’s this homey vibe that plants bring to a space, and if you’re someone who just wants plants—period—and doesn’t mind exactly what they are, the Mystery Jungle Subscription Box is perfect.
Every month, you’ll get a mystery plant in a 4” grow pot. It’s picked by the folks at Rooted and ideal for starting or expanding your indoor jungle. Even if your jungle is restricted to a tiny window sill.
Subscriptions ship out the first week of each month, and if there’s ever one where you decide you’d like to hold off or if you’ve reached your maximum plant quota, you can pause, skip, or cancel your plan easily.
Pick from a 3-month or 6-month Rooted Mystery Jungle Subscription Box subscription for $60-$120 (total). Pay upfront to get a 10% discount or in monthly installments of $20.
Rooted Furry Friends Subscription Box Review
As this Rooted review is being written, I’m staring at a gorgeous monstera plant with one completely mangled leaf. Why is it mangled, you ask? Because of a particularly agitated cat who finds said leaf irresistible in fits of rage, nerves, or whatever demon spell possesses it.
Pets chew on plants. It’s an unavoidable thing. Move them higher, and they’ll somehow find a way to launch themselves at it. Good thing monsteras are pet-friendly, but not all plants are.
The Rooted Furry Friends Subscription Box has pet-safe plants only. Each month, you’ll get a 4” diameter grow pot with a new plant for your space. And with this box, you can put your plants anywhere. Although, if you don’t want your spider plant to mysteriously go brown, maybe move it off the floor.
Get your pet-friendly plant delivered for 3 months for $60 or 6 months for $120. Choose monthly payments of $20 or do a one-time payment to get 10% off.
Rooted Plants Review
Whether you like short and spiky or thin and leafy, the Rooted Plants collection is a joy to look through. Up next, we’ll walk you through the brand’s best-selling plants, which coincidentally happen to be a mix of both spirited cacti and long-legged leafy picks.
Rooted DIY Cactus Kit Review
Cacti are a go-to for those who don’t like a lot of fuss when it comes to plants. These spiky guys are good at doing their own thing and don’t like a lot of attention. The Rooted DIY Cactus Kit gives you two options:
- Adam (Peruvian Apple Cactus): He’s the one you think of when you dream of the typical cactus. And yes, we do know that cacti are exactly what your dreams are made of because…same.
- Albert (Montrose Cactus): A little more wiggly with multiple arms. Kind of like the Goro from Mortal Kombat in cactus form, just a lot better looking.
Once you pick which cactus’ look you vibe with, you get to pick whether you’d like it to be 1-foot or 2-feet tall. So here’s the thing, your cactus won’t be pre-potted. In fact, it’s a cutting—that’s where the whole DIY thing comes in.
You’ll get the cactus cutting, an 8” terracotta or graphite planter with a tray, two bags of Organic Potting Mix, and a 1-quart bag of Lava Rocks. Adam costs between $55-$80, while Albert is $60-$85. It’s a heavier bundle, so it ships for a flat rate of $10.
Rooted Charlotte Variegated Spider Plant Review
The spider plant is one of the most popular household plants around the globe. Maybe it’s because they’re easy to care for, or maybe it’s because people can’t resist their long, spidery leaves that hang so daintily above kitchen windows. We think it’s a mixture of both.
Like your most-feared arachnid, the Rooted Charlotte Variegated Spider Plant grows quickly and loves minimal light. Pets can chomp away on this one, though it looks really nice when hanging so that its leaves can cascade down.
Sucking out toxins from your home, this natural air purifier comes in small (10-12” in a 4” pot) for $20 and medium (12-16” in a 6” pot) for $30.
Rooted Guy Golden Barrel Cactus Review
This is a cactus for the books. The Rooted Guy Golden Barrel Cactus makes the perfect centerpiece for your at-home office collection. It likes bright direct or indirect light, but just be sure to place it somewhere sunny, a window sill will do.
Artistically blending dark green with almost neon yellow spikes, the cactus is nature’s handiwork at its finest. Don’t fuss too much about this guy but keep it away from pets. Ouch!
Available in large only (11-12” tall in a 12” pot), pick it up for $160. Or, pay for it in four installments with Klarna.
Rooted Sonic Hedgehog Aloe Review
Full of personality, the Rooted Sonic Hedgehog Aloe is spiky, but not unfriendly. Known for doing well in the heat, it doesn’t need much water but does like bright, direct sunlight.
Since it’s got a gel-like substance in the middle of its fleshy leaves, as well as spikes that could hurt, keep this one out of reach of pets. Add the 8-10” plant (4” pot) to your succulents collection for $20.
Who Is Rooted For?
Rooted was created to reconnect people with nature. It’s geared towards people who live in cities or places where plant stores aren’t the most accessible.
Ideal for anyone no matter how many plants they already have at home, Rooted is a fun way to shop for gorgeous plants, cacti, herbs, and flowers without the need to map out your transit route or coordinate a pick-up at the plant store from your best friend’s girlfriend.
How Does Rooted Work?
If you’re new to the concept of buying plants online. We get it, we’ve been there too. Just like how ordering groceries online is a normal part of life now, ordering plants online can be too—only, the delivery part is where things can get tricky.
Rooted’s greenhouse is located in Florida and ships out to the 48 contiguous states via USPS and FedEx. Here’s a basic rundown of how the service works:
- Pop on to HeyRooted.com
- Shop for your favorite plants
- Wait for them to be delivered
- Read the care guide and get growing
- Text for help if you need it
If you’ve signed up for a subscription, your plants will ship out in the first week of each month. Subscription fees are charged on the 25th of each month. Pause, skip, or cancel anytime.
Rooted Reviews: What Do Customers Think?
Plants can be delicate things. Add a few different pairs of hands and delivery trucks and we understand why some are hesitant to order plants online.
Your plants arriving in perfect condition isn’t the only concern we know you may have though. So in this section of our Rooted review, we’ll look into what customers have to say about the health of the plants when they arrive and what the overall service is like. Let’s start with some ratings from HeyRooted.com.
- Becky Ponytail Palm: average of 5/5 stars from 2 reviews
- Olenna Crown of Thorns: average of 5/5 stars from 3 reviews
- Nellie Alocasia Nebula: average of 5/5 stars from 12 reviews
- Mystery Jungle Subscription Box: average of 5/5 stars from 4 reviews
- Furry Friends Subscription Box: average of 4.5/5 stars from 2 reviews
We looked into each of the comments sections for the plants to see what buyers had to say about their health. For Becky, one Rooted review read, “Very good plant. Healthy and strong.” When we looked at Olenna, we found another that read, “So far it is beautiful and looks amazing,” along with another that mentioned impressive packaging.
When it came to Nellie, another customer wrote, “In fabulous condition!!…Immediately upon opening it you can tell so much love and care went into the plant and shipping. Not a single leaf dropped either which is wild for an alocasia! It’s even putting out new growth.”
There isn’t too much more we could say about how well Rooted delivers on its promises. But from what we found in the comments of all the plants we checked out, it looks like the majority arrive in great condition thanks to the brand’s stellar packing.
Now that we’ve seen what folks have to say on the Rooted website, it’s time to check out if the same caliber of reviews holds off of it. Our first stop was Facebook. The brand’s page has an average score of 3.4/5 stars from 43 buyers. Mentioning its customer service, one wrote:
“Customer service was amazing for me…They were very communicative with me and always answered every question and message I had. After, I got my package in perfect condition, and my plants were amazingly packaged and protected. They are healthy and amazing.”
Responsive customer service is something we look for in all brands. Since ordering anything online can be tricky, it’s important to know if a brand can make things better should something wrong happen. And trust us, no matter how amazing a company is, things can go wrong. It happens. It’s all about how the brand recovers.
Our last Rooted review comes from the brand’s Yelp page, where the company earned 3.5/5 stars from 14 reviews. Though it no longer has a retail location in NYC, some reviews mention what buying online from the brand is like. One reads:
“The cost for the plant and pots delivered is unrivaled. The quality of the pot itself is great, and goes well with a modern aesthetic. My plant came within a week’s time and was in great condition. While on a walk with Sterling to get him repotted, someone shouted “nice plant!”…lololol so there’s that.”
Even though the average score for Rooted in 3.5/5 stars outside of its website, there were a lot of positive reviews that mentioned its great customer service, responsive messaging, and on-time delivery. We did come across some feedback about plants arriving in tough shape, but others say a quick message to customer service is all that’s needed to remedy the situation.
Is Rooted Worth It?
We think plants in general are worth it. So a company that makes it super easy to shop for them, buy them, and get them delivered is a no-brainer—especially for city folk like us who don’t have a car and rely heavily on public transit.
In fact, buying plants like this just kind of makes sense, and while visiting a giant greenhouse is ideal, it’s not always possible. With great variety, affordable prices, and free delivery, we’d definitely recommend giving Rooted a try to add a touch (or an abundance) of green to your favorite space.
Rooted Promotions & Discounts
While we dug our way through the brand’s website for this Rooted review, we were sure to keep an eye out for deals among the rows of green, yellow, and the occasional pop of pink. Here’s what we uncovered:
- Prepay your 3 or 6-month subscription and get 10% off
- Pay with Catch and get 10% in store credit (psst…it’s free to use)
- Free shipping on all plants
Where to Buy Rooted
Rooted now operates completely online. That’s what the brand was born to do, and though it did have an NYC retail location, in today’s world, selling directly from its Florida greenhouse is perfect. To shop its entire selection, head straight to HeyRooted.com.
FAQ
Who owns Rooted?
Ryan Lee, Kay Kim, and Johnny Wu own Rooted. The trio runs the brand from NYC but grow its plants in Florida.
Does Rooted ship internationally?
No, but it’s for good reason. Rooted only ships to the 48 contiguous states, which is smart considering it deals with live plants. The brand needs to guarantee quick delivery times and when shipping internationally, that can’t really be promised along with low shipping costs.
What is Rooted’s Shipping Policy?
Rooted ships all of its plant-only orders free within the contiguous US as long as they weigh under 40 lbs. Once you place your order online, typically, it’s ready to be shipped out in 2-4 days, but some ship out the same day.
When USPS or FedEx have your order, delivery can take between 3-5 business days. Bad weather may delay the delivery of your plant. If you’re buying anything that’s not a plant, Rooted charges a $6-$8 flat rate ground shipping fee. Heavier items cost $15 and orders that weigh over 40lbs cost $30.
What is Rooted’s Return Policy?
Plant’s can’t be shipped back for a refund, but you probably already knew that.
If something is up with your plant, like if it’s not looking its best or arrives damaged, send an email to [email protected] with pictures and they’ll get you sorted. Rooted does not accept returns on soil, planters, or other merchandise.
