Steelcase Office Chair Review
Whether you believe it or not, the right chair can make or break your day. Since you’re here reading this Steelcase office chair review, I bet you’ve wiggled around on your share of uncomfortable seats.
Why does this chair get an entire review? Because it’s really quite remarkable—and this is coming from someone with frequent neck and wrist pain. What’s my favorite thing about it?
The entire thing is customizable. That means you can get a headrest if you want it, four-way adjustable arms if you need them, and pick your preferred color and material.
You’ll choose your favorite hues for the upholstery, frame, and 3D micro knit (they can either match or be totally different). Then you can add on a headrest, choose your arm preference, and pick wheels for either the carpet or hard floors.
Up next in this Steelcase office chair review, I’ll explain why I think this chair deserves applause.
Performance
The Steelcase office chair doesn’t just help you sit upright, it was made to give you the energy to help you be more productive and focused. With features that support you in any position, you won’t expend as much energy trying to get comfortable as you work throughout your lunch hour.
Design
The Steelcase office chair isn’t your run-of-the-mill chair. It has a ton of features to support your entire body while you work. Let’s go through them one by one.
- LiveBack flexor system in the backrest cradles your spine as you change positions
- Adjustable lumbar support means comfortable, fuss-free sitting
- Weight-activated tilt moves the chair with you
- Foam seat with air pockets for a pressure-free sit

Important Things To Consider Before Buying A Steelcase Office Chair
You’ve seen the specs, but there are a few more things to think about before you consider purchasing one for yourself. I’ll list the most important factors below.
Ergonomics
An ergonomic seat means your body will be supported throughout your day. And pressure relief ensures that you’ll be comfortable while you work.
Price & Financing
As previously mentioned, the base price for the Steelcase office chair is $487. It’s a little more pricey than an IKEA stool, but it’s also a lot more comfortable for your back, neck, and arms. If you’d like to split up your payments, the brand offers payment plans through PayPal Credit.
Adjustments
This chair adjusts pretty effortlessly and automatically as you move. Even so, it also comes with height adjustable armrests, but you’ll have the option to add on those with four-way adjustability.
Support
During long bouts of sitting, we can use all the support we can get. Luckily, the Steelcase office chair is big on support, providing a cushioned seat with air pockets to alleviate pressure.
Tech Aspects
If you need more from your chair, Steelcase has it. With the weight-activated tilt feature, your chair will provide resistance and height while you lean in and out to ensure you’re always supported.
Product Guarantee
Steelcase guarantees that if your chair is damaged due to defects in material or workmanship, they will repair or replace it free of charge.
Weight Capacity
The Steelcase office chair can hold up to 400 lbs.
Warranty
The brand provides a limited lifetime warranty. You can read the Product Guarantee for more details.
Assembly
Not a fan of complicated assembly requiring tiny tools? If so, don’t worry! The Steelcase office chair can be put together in about two minutes without the need for tools at all.
Materials
Your chair’s fabric is a 3D micro knit. However, you’ll be able to choose either soft polyester or leather for the upholstery.
Sustainability
The Steelcase office chair contains 12% recycled materials. Yet, 91% of the chair itself is recyclable.
Steelcase Office Chair Alternatives
Now that I’ve told you everything you need to know about my featured product in this Steelcase office chair review, it’s time to consider your options. If you prefer shopping around before you fully commit to a purchase, these two chairs are worth checking out.
All 33 Chair
Just like the Steelcase office chair, the All 33 chair has an ergonomic design. So, it can help improve your posture and prevent pain. With vegan leather and fabric options, it has a more limited color selection than the Steelcase chair.
But similar to Steelcase, it offers sit-in motion technology and an adjustable seat and arms. However, there are no options for add-ons and it takes about 10 minutes to assemble. You can get it in vegan leather for $999.
X Chair
X Chair sells a handful of office chairs. While the majority of them have a similar look, they each have subtle differences.
For instance, some are made with leather while others have mesh. But all of them have built-in headrests and adjustable arms and seats like the Steelcase office chair does. Designed with a contoured back, just like my featured brand, prices range from $400–1,900.
Both of these brands are great contenders, but in terms of quality and price, Steelcase takes the cake. I like that its signature chair merges the advanced features of the All 33 chair but the low prices of simpler models from X Chair.
Steelcase Office Chair Reviews: What Do Customers Think?
In this part of the Steelcase office chair review, I’ll take a look at what customers are saying about the brand. According to Gear Patrol, it’s “the only office chair that has ticked every box for us,” and it’s “the best you can buy.” Why?
Because it’s really high quality—especially when you factor in the price. You’ve now seen what other ergonomic office chairs cost, so Steelcase’s chair is perhaps the most affordable in terms of its features. Tyler Chin of Gear Patrol continued:
“Going beyond adjustable arm height, the Series 1’s armrests are as active as its sitter. The arms are 4D, meaning they slide around with you as you work. Each arm rest, which is soft and supple on bare skin, moves forward and backward, side-to-side and has 40-degree pivot rotation.”
It’s these advanced features that really stand out for those who use this chair. Checking in with Amazon, the public seems to agree. There, the chair was awarded a 4.4/5 star rating from 1,399 shoppers. Here’s how it breaks down:
- 5 stars: 67%
- 4 stars: 17%
- 3 stars: 7%
- 2 stars: 5%
- 1 star: 4%
On Amazon, a customer left this glowing Steelcase office chair review: “…the chair is awesome. You can adjust the lumbar support, arm height, and pad position. Adjusting the chair height is super easy, as is locking it in place. It’s ridiculously ergonomic, your back never leaves contact with the chair. The bottom pad lifts as you lean back and it’s comfy af.”
Similarly, the team at Tech Gear Lab awarded it 4/5 stars, rating it on its comfort, adjustability, durability, and ease of assembly. It scored exceptionally high on the last two and mid ratings for the first two.
What was their conclusion? While it’s not the “most comfortable chair we have tested to date, it’s far from the worst,” and in the end, considering its cost, it still has great value. Read the next section of this Steelcase office chair review for my final verdict.
Is The Steelcase Office Chair Worth It?
With everything considered in this Steelcase office chair review, is my featured product really worth it? Well, I think it’s a stellar option for those who don’t want to spend a fortune but want a durable and ergonomic chair.
Not everyone fell in love with this chair while testing it, but honestly, that’s to be expected no matter what kind of product we’re dealing with. For the majority, the Steelcase office chair was exactly what they were looking for.
And along with perks like a lifetime warranty, free shipping, and flexible payment plans, it’s an easy choice.
